Gail’s is committed to a long-term sustainability journey, where their tamariki/students connect with and explore the environment, then plan, design and take action in their local places in collaboration with their communities.
They’ve introduced many initiatives and practices, included conducting three separate waste audits to learn how to reduce their centres waste.
Changes included litter-less lunches which reduced their waste from four bins per week to 1.5 bins, while food scraps go to compost and a worm farm which are used in the sharing garden to produce fresh vegies.
Gail’s staff and whanau cared for a section of Kitchener Park for over a year removing weeds on a monthly working bee, and they presented a power-point to MDC on waste reduction and specifically the potential of finding a sustainable way to deal with disposable nappies.
Gail’s Libby Ellery says, “We have made a significant positive reduction in our environmental impact however the most important change I believe we have made and want to continue to make is in our children learning to love and respect our planet and know how to care for paptuanuku, to make being kaitiaki a part of their way of being. By doing that, they will influence others around them creating a ripple on effect of sustainability.”
